Yesterday marked the official launch of AMD’s new graphics cards, the famous RX 9070 series. However, a new launch also means a new driver. To accompany these new products, AMD has released version 25.3.1 WHQL of its RADEON Software. In addition to supporting the brand’s new boards, this new version brings a host of new features. Let’s unpack the (lengthy) note of change together.
RADEON Sofware 25.3.1 WHQL, what’s new?
New hardware support:
Naturally, this new version brings support for the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 non-XT. However, we learn that the reds bring support for a third card, the RX 7650 GRE, as well as numerous iGPUs. Ryzen AI 5/7 Pro 340/350 RADEON 840M and 860M are supported, as are non-pro versions. The same goes for Ryzen 9 9955HX/9850HX and 9955HX3D.
New features:
Of course, the main new feature is support for AI-boosted FSR 4. The driver features a selector to automatically toggle support on compatible games. However, this feature remains exclusive to the RX 9000, and AMD indicates that over 30 compatible games will be available.
AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2.1 is also available. This will reduce ghosting and improve image quality. This feature is supported by the RX 6000/7000/9070 and Ryzen AI 300.
For RX 9000 users, the driver includes a chat bot that will answer your questions about AMD hardware and enable the activation of features in the driver. This AI is managed locally.
With this, the Image Inspector and Install Manager functionalities for better management of installation and updates.
Finally, RX 9000 users will benefit from Image Sharpening 2.0 to improve display sharpness more reactively in games, video or across the entire desktop.
Other “highlights” :
AMD adds support for two new games: FrogPunk and Split Fiction.
Otherwise, we learn that ROCm is now supported by the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL2) for RX 7000. Basically, you no longer need a Linux dual boot to run ROCm. Next, we learn of support for LIama3 8B and Stable Diffusion 3 models, as well as Hugging Face Transformers and Ubuntu 24.04.
RX 7000s benefit from improved AI performance. We’re talking about performance boosts of up to 70% on Adobe Lightroom AI, 13% on Lightroom Denoise, 40% on Topaz Photo AI and 10% on DaVinci resolve AI.
In addition to other developer news, HYPR-RX is now supported in Farming Simulator 25, S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 and Silent Hill 2.
On the Vulkan side, the VK_EXT_depth_clamp_control extension is now supported.
The patches:
Without further ado, here is the list of patches brought by this release:
- HEVC encoder will work correctly with OBS.
- Corrected driver timeout on Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 with an AMD iGPU such as the Ryzen AI 9 HX370.
- Performance on Delta Force with an RX 7000 will no longer be as low as expected.
- No more intermittent stuttering on Marvel Rival’s when FSR3 is active.
Known problems:
Finally, AMD reports the following problems:
- Driver crashes can occur when playing Marvel’s Spider Man 2 or Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart when Image Inspector is active. As a workaround, simply disable Image Inspector.
- Lower-than-expected performance may be experienced when using YouTube on Microsoft Edge after driver installation. As a workaround, we recommend restarting Edge and relaunching YouTube.
- Some third-party software that relies on the ADL SDK for ROP detection will incorrectly report 64 ROPs. This issue will be corrected in a future update.
- Incorrect gamma is displayed in-game on Counter-Strike 2 using MSAA x8 on RX 9070 series.
- The AMD driver may not correctly report FSR4 activation on Marvel’s Sipider-Man 2.
- Intermittent crashes may occur on Indian Jones and the Great Circle with Ultra settings with Path Tracing active. To get around this problem, simply disable Path Tracing.
- After using the AMD cleanup utility for Windows, the AMD bug-reporting tool may appear intermittently during a new driver installation on a Ryzen 7000 or later when paired with an AMD graphics part.
- After a driver upgrade on laptop some users may not be able to launch the integrated webcam. To get around this problem, we recommend using the Windows cleaning utility and installing the previous recommended driver.
- Finally, there are some limitations for the Windows subsystem for Linux support (WSL2).
